-27th December, THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH – CYCLE C

Reflections for December are by Bishop Burchell McPherson, Bishop of Montego Bay, Jamaica

Samuel 1:20-22, 24-28; St. John 3: 1-2, 21-24; Luke 2: 41-52

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, which we are celebrating today is the last liturgical Feast of this calendar year. At the heart of the three readings is the family with special emphasis on children. At this time of year when families are re-united and as we celebrate The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, we reflect on what it is to be a family. The family is the basic unit of our society and the Church. It is in the family that we first learn to communicate, and that we learn what is good and bad. It is in the family that we learn what love is because it is in the family that we first receive love. It is in the family that we first learn to forgive and to pray. It is in the family that we first learn about God and Jesus and Our Lady. Continue reading

REFLECTIONS FOR CHRISTMAS MASS DURING THE DAY

Reflections for December are by Bishop Burchell McPherson, Bishop of Montego Bay, Jamaica

Isaiah 52:7-10; Hebrews 1:1-6; John 1:1-18

A very happy and Holy Christmas everyone! May the joy and peace of Our Lord Jesus Christ be always in your hearts as it is today. For today, we have seen the glory of Jesus in the Church, in the world, in our families, and everywhere we look we see people joyfully celebrating the fulfillment of the promise of God the Father to send a Redeemer into the world. December 20th, 2015 – THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT – CYCLE C

Reflections for December are by Bishop Burchell McPherson, Bishop of Montego Bay, Jamaica

Micah 5:1-4; Hebrews 10:5-10; Luke 1:39-45

On this last Sunday of Advent, the gospel tells the story of Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth. Elizabeth must have felt the need to speak with someone because her husband Zechariah could not speak, and it was a big comfort to see her cousin Mary who came to help her out. Mary stayed three months until John was born. Mary brought a comforting presence to her cousin Elizabeth. She brought companionship and friendship. Continue reading

December 13th, 2015 – THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT – CYCLE C

Reflections for December are by Bishop Burchell McPherson, Bishop of Montego Bay, Jamaica

Zephaniah 3:14-18a; Isiah 12; 2-6; Philippians 4:4-7; Luke 3:10-18

Today is Gaudete Sunday or the Sunday of Rejoicing. As St. Paul reminds the Philippians, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice!” (1 Phil. 4:4). The same invitation to rejoice is contained in the first reading. In today’s Second Reading, we hear Paul encouraging his community to a peace that surpasses our understanding, because the “Lord is near.”  We can rejoice, because Jesus has fulfilled the promise of God to come, see and lovingly conquer. December 6th 2015. SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT – CYCLE C

Reflections for December are by Bishop Burchell McPherson, Bishop of Montego Bay, Jamaica

BIO DATA – Bishop McPherson

Baruch 5:1-9; Psalms 126:1-6; Philippians 1:4-6, 8-11; Luke 3:1-6

Over the next two weeks John the Baptist takes centre stage. In our Sunday liturgies we will not see or hear Jesus’s name until he is lying in a manger in Bethlehem. John the Baptist appears today announcing the coming of “the salvation of God.” What we hear now is the simple statement that someone special is coming. John is forcefully inviting people to a cleansing baptism as a preparation for the Lord’s arrival. John is preaching a baptism of repentance. Baptism itself is a purification ritual and John is inviting people to be purified from the unholy things in their lives. Continue reading

Listen to the poor, listen to the priests, Remain the person you are: Nuncio tells Bishop McPherson

mcpherson 1

To become a Bishop is not an honour; it is a call to service. Too many bishops start to change after ordination. Remain who you are. Listen to the poor; listen to the priests; look after the people and priests.” These were some of the frank words of advice the Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Nicola Girasoli to Bishop Burchell McPherson following his ordination before a packed and joyful Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Montego Bay on Saturday 8 June.
