GOSPEL MEDITATION First Sunday of Advent (C)

Reflections for November are by Bishop Luis Secco, Bishop of Willemstad, Curacao

(Lk. 21:25-28.34-36)

Brothers and sisters, the first Sunday of Advent marks the beginning of a new liturgical year, but also a season of grace, a time of hope and joy preparing for the coming of Jesus, our Savior.

However, this Gospel of St. Luke, which we meditate on this Sunday, is presented in a special apocalyptic way with corresponding terrible events like the signs of the moon and stars…. men dying of fear…. the powers of heaven will be shaken (vv. 25-26). But finally all these happenings prepare the central event that is the coming of the Son of Man with power and great glory. Continue reading

Sunday 22 November 2015 Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

Reflections for November are by Bishop Luis Secco, Bishop of Willemstad, Curacao

Gospel Meditation    John 18: 33b-37

The Gospel for the solemnity of Christ the King helps us to reflect and direct our attention on the dialogue between Jesus and Pilate; it is about two different and even opposing dimensions of kingship and regality. “Just as light has nothing in common with darkness… so the kingdom of God and a kingdom of sin cannot co-exist” (Origen). 33rd SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME (B)

Reflctions for November are by Bishop Luis Secco, Bishop of Willemstad, Curacao

Mark 13: 24-32

We are approaching the end of the Liturgical Year and evangelist Mark offers us an impressive image of Jesus: the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.

The Gospel of this Sunday presents us in an apocalyptic way, the end of the human history and on that moment the whole humanity is called to an encounter with our Master Jesus. It is a manifestation of the “Lordship” of Jesus that we are going to celebrate next Sunday (Solemnity of Christ the King). He has conquered evil and has definitely submitted the whole power of death by His Resurrection. Continue reading

Mark 12: 38-44

The Gospel text of this Sunday presents two opposing but connected facts: on the one hand it seems to follow what Jesus has just pronounced in the temple (Mk 12, 35-40) and has raised many questions among the Scribes and Pharisees: about the resurrection, the taxes to pay to Caesar, the greatest commandment… Continue reading

Sunday 1st November 2015 – Solemnity of All Saints

Reflections for November are by Bishop Luis Secco, Bishop of Willemstad, Curacao

Gospel Meditation – Mt 5: 1-12a

The solemnity of All Saint offers us the opportunity to meditate and deepen the opening part of the Beatitudes. The Liturgy of the Solemnity of All Saints has chosen this Gospel of the “Beatitudes”, because the Saints are the ones that have lived this “happiness” in a sublime way in spite of all difficulties or challenges they have gone through.

Jesus starts with calling “happy” and “blessed”, those that make the Kingdom of God possible and present in our world. How can we make it present? Continue reading

Faith Friendship and Communication with Christ: Bishop Luis Secco Lenten Message

Message for Lent by Bishop of Willemstad which summarizes Pope Benedict’s Lenten message

Brothers and sisters, The peace and love of Jesus Christ be with you!

Every year the Church offers us the season of Lent as an opportunity to revive our faith and take the path to conversionby the words: “Repent, and believe in the Gospel“. The imposition of ashes on our forehead in the form of a crossmeans taking a firm decision to follow Christ and to proclaim his message of hope. We proclaim again the words of St.Paul: “Insofar as I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God who has loved me and given himself up for me. (Gal 2:20).Faith is the fundamental attitude of one who trusts in God because “without faith it is impossible to please God” (Heb. 11:6). Pope Benedict declared this Year of Faith to remind us that baptism has opened for us “the door of faith” which leads us to an encounter with Jesus Christ and a deeper relationship with Him. Following the recommendations of the Church for this Year of Faith, I invite you to live this Lenten season with special attention on four areas: prayer, reconciliation, evangelization and charity.

Faith and Prayer Pope Benedict XVI encourages us to make the Year of Faith a continuous experience of prayer.Because prayer helps us to encounter Jesus in a deeper, more personal level, that is, at the level of our heart. Jesus calls us his friends (cf. John 15.15), but there can be no friendship without communication with each other. When we praise God and ask for favours, we grow in friendship and confidence in Him. Remember the invitation the celebrant makesseveral times at Mass: “Let us pray”. Let these words resonate always in our minds and hearts especially this season of Lent.

Faith and reconciliation One of the great opportunities the Church offers us every year is to help us respond to Christ’s invitation to conversion and contrition for our sins through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We ourselves cannot eliminateour wounds, failures and sins. Almost all the miracles that Jesus did were accompanied by his words: “Your sins are forgiven” because He realized man’s great need for forgiveness. A good confession can mean a big change in our lives!

Faith and Evangelization When we realize the importance and value of Christ’s message, we can also understand that the greatest work of charity is evangelization. “There is no action more beneficial- and therefore more charitable-towards one’s neighbour than to break the bread of the Word of God, and to share with him the Good News of the Gospel: evangelization is the highest and the most integral promotion of the human person”. (2013 Lenten Message of Pope Benedict XVI).So in all the parishes of our diocese, during the period of Lent, we must give extra attention to the growth of our faith through catechesis on the “Creed”, so as to be able to gain a new force in our mission to visit families and to show that we are a Christian Catholic community that wants to share the good news with others.

Faith and charity In the letter of Pope Benedict XVI for Lent, he emphasizes that there can be no faith without action, without charity. “Faith without works, is like a tree without fruit” … Faith helps us to recognize the gifts that Godin his goodness has entrusted to us; charity makes them fruitful So as a concrete action of charity during this Lent we will make some special collection for the civil war refugees in Syria, the thousands of people, especiallyfamilies, who have fled to another country and who have no other way of hope and means to live. We cannot provide relief to all, but surely we can bring hope to some with our support. Brothers and sisters, Let us prepare for the celebration of Easter with the four areas I mentioned in this letter: prayer, reconciliation, evangelization and charity. I sincerely hope that this Lenten season will be for every one of us a propitious time to renew our faith in God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. I pray for each one of you and pray to Mother Mary, Star of Evangelization to guide you all in meeting her Son Jesus in this season of Lent. Your servant in Jesus and Mary,

+ Luis A. Secco, SDB Bishop of Willemstad

A Letter to Priests:Reflections regarding what people expect of a priest

Bishop  Luis A. Secco – Bishop
of Willemstad

Padua, September 2011

Dear brother priests, The peace of the Lord be with you!  I send my greetings and blessings from Italy, the place of the first years of my life in Padua, near the shrine of Saint Anthony, where I went to pray and to celebrate the Holy Eucharist during these days of vacation. Also I want to thank God and all of you for the pastoral work that everyone is doing in the place that God’s providence has set for you.
